Right Frontal Infarct "what is it"?

The brain is an extremely complex organ that controls various body functions. If a stroke occurs and blood flow can't reach the region that controls a particular body function, that part of the body won't work as it should.

If the stroke occurs toward the back of the brain, for instance, it's likely that some disability involving vision will result. The effects of a stroke depend primarily on the location of the obstruction and the extent of brain tissue affected.

Right Brain
The effects of a stroke depend on several factors, including the location of the obstruction and how much brain tissue is affected. However, because one side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body, a stroke affecting one side will result in neurological complications on the side of the body it affects. For example, if the stroke occurs in the brain's right side, the left side of the body (and the left side of the face) will be affected, which could produce any or all of the following:
  • Paralysis on the left side of the body
  • Vision problems
  • Quick, inquisitive behavioral style
  • Memory loss

Kearstyn
I was born in Colorado. My name is Kearstyn. Mom says all the Dr.'s said I was beautiful the day I was born. I have a cat named Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell is more like my best friend. Mom says we act like siblings, we rough house together, Tinkerbell (Siamese) likes to chase me and play tag. Mom says I am annointed and blessed. When I was born I had 3 strokes. I like horses and I got to ride to my Uncle Troy's horse. I really really want to go to New York someday and stay in a fancy hotel way high up in the sky. I like purple and I like getting Mani Pedis. Mom is letting me try makeup, the real kind not little girl makeup. Makes me feel good. I got my first pair of 3" heels.

Functions of Frontal Lobe

**Great Information found at Livestrong.com***
Information used in helping Family, Friends and Teachers understand Kearstyn's challenges... Very Helpful..

The cerebrum, which is the largest part of the brain, is divided into four areas, or lobes, each of which houses different functions. The cerebrum is also divided into two hemispheres: the right, which helps you think creatively and the left, which helps you think logically. Hence, you have a right-sided frontal lobe and a leftt-sided frontal lobe.
Your personality lives in the frontal lobes, where emotions, problem solving, reasoning, planning and other functions are managed. The frontal lobes are linked to sensory and memory centers throughout the brain. Their primary job is to allow us to think things through and determine how to use information that is located elsewhere in the brain.

Problem Solving

Higher-level thinking is supported by the frontal lobes. Activity in these lobes allows us to reason, make judgments, make plans for the near and far future, make choices, take action, solve problems and generally control our living environment. Without fully functioning frontal lobes, you may have intelligence, but you wouldn’t be able to put it to use

Social Interaction

The frontal lobes or, more specifically, the prefrontal cortex located within the frontal lobes, possess the ability to access information and memories we accumulate that remind us how to communicate and interact appropriately in social or public situations. The frontal lobes are responsible for empathetic behavior, allowing us to understand the thinking and experiences of others. This understanding helps us take cues as to how to behave or respond in different types of social situations, such as the correct response to a job interview question, or understand the punch line of a joke. Damage to some areas of the frontal lobe can also affect sexual interest and activity.

A True Love Story

16 years ago, the love story began. A single mom was about to give birth on a hot Colorado day. The only memorable thing in the room across the way was a Smiling 8x10 picture of her father who passed away in 1988 in a horrific plane crash in Buena Park CA . His infectious smile, she would soon focus on to help her through the fast coming events, and welcoming of her baby girl into the world. The time for the expected arrival fast approached and this single mom was about to welcome her daughter, she had many thoughts running through her mind about what this blessed little girl would look like, color of her eyes, hair, ten toes, etc. However this would soon be interupted with much confussion and uncertainty. This single mom had her sister standing by her side through the whole adventure. This sister too was expecting her own little girl in approximately 30 days. This sister was very concerned for her sister, but would also have anxiety for herself expecting her own child quite soon. No other family was present at this time of delivery. From early early morning to delivery time 10:52am, the delivery would soon show to be extremely dangerous and uncertain. From about 6am to delivery time, Dr's and Nurses rushed in and out of the Delivery Room was concern and anxiety written all over their faces. The attending nurse doing her best to keep Mom calm and distracted. With no luck. A Nurse came in with much concern and advised that "We might need to do a C - Section", "We'll need you to sign these papers just incase", no explaination of why or what was going on to prompt this. This mom would find out later that it was not necessary and as the nurse said "We are going to go ahead and let you deliver her naturally, she said the Dr. advised". Short time later Delivery started and the pain was horrendous. The Dr. said "why is she feeling all this?", a voice said, "Not sure" she was given the Epideral. Another voice said in the background, " it appears the shift change attendee's notes shows the Epideral level was reduced in error." Many people cames rushing into the room, there was Mass Activity and then the voice said " Ok Mom we are going to do this". Mom heard "Push, come on Mom you can do it". Mom heard a lot of noise and people talking to each other and then heard another "Come On Mom you have to push". Mom said in a very much FREDDIE CRUGER voice tone " I AM DAMN IT!~!!!!. Another voice said " Damn don't piss her off"... Mom's sister, standing by her side says "I never heard you talk that way before", (smiling and giggling). Mom yells at the Nurse standing next to her "I've got to pee!!!", (short lived laughter), "Mom you're ok, it'll be alright", then at 10:52am.... The Arrival of Kearstyn. To the left of mom, mom could see her little girl. She was blueish color. Mom glanced over to the right and looked at her sister with fear on her face and a small tear running down her cheek. Sis says "Focus on me, it'll be alright, she'll be ok".. I later found out that my little girl was being attended to and they were attempting to get her to breathe. Time went by, not sure on how much, then a nurse came into the room with the cutest most beautiful baby girl and layed her in mom's arms. Instructions were given on how to hold her, and talk to her, etc. Mom was able to have a short amount of time to bond with her beautiful baby girl. Shortly after that a nurse came in an said "Mom, we need to take her and run a glucose test", "Don't worry it is normal proceedure". Gently mom handed daughter to nurse, nurse said we'll bring her back to you soon mom" "you need to rest and drink some liquids". Mom and sister of Mom start to talk about what just happened. Time passed which seemed like forever, then nurse comes in and says "everything seems ok, we are going to move you up to the Maternity Floor and we will bring her to you soon". Mom, gets some time to rest, shower, change clothes and get a bite to eat. Friends of mom were notified of delivery and started to show up with gifts and flowers. Some more time went by and the nurse came in with little Kearstyn. Kearstyn had already been given her name when mommy found out the day she was pregnant. All during her pregnancy she spoke to her with her name. Mom did alot of research and thought and prayer into the name she would give her. Many doubters would say "what if its a boy" and mom would say "Nope, I know SHE's a girl" there is no doubt in my mind. Mommy knows!! When Kearstyn was delivered to mom's arms again, mom kisses her gently on her forehead and tells her "I love you, I love you so much, my baby girl". After about 10 minutes or so of bonding, the nurse comes in, she has another nurse-ish person with her and paperwork. The one nurse says, "Mom, we have something we need to talk to you about". Panic appeared on mom's face. The head nurse says "While we were checking her glucose level, she had a seizure". The nurse went on to say they were not expecting this at all. She said, "as soon as this was seen, we immediately ran tests", "we are going to have you speak with the Nurologist and he will give you more information", "we will leave her with you for another 5 minutes then we are going to take her to the NICU. "You'll be able to come down there soon and see her".

Part II: True Love Story

After quite some time, mom started to become anxious and did not want to stay in bed in rest. She proceeded to ring the buzzer to the nurses station. Her nurse came in and asked what she could do to help. Mom states I need to know what is going on. I want to see me daughter. The nurse started to explain to mom " you need to stay in bed and rest, you went through a tramatic experience, according to your chart you experienced a large tear requiring 30 stitches and Dr. has notes saying you must rest. Mom was not cooperative and insisted on seeing her daughter. Nurse says, " I'll go speak with the Dr. and I'll be right back". Thirty minutes or so passed and nurse returns with Wheelchair. Mom was taken down to NICU where she would stay for many many hours. Hours flew by like minutes with all the communication with Dr.'s, Specialist and Nurses and Attending Staff. Mom was taken to bedside of daughter where she broke down and almost fell to the floor. If it were not for the Nurse standing behind her, mom would have hit the floor. The tears flowing down her face as she looked at her little baby girl, bundled in a blanket, at the foot of her bed a little pink sign saying "Kearstyn -----, 8 lbs 15.4oz born August 1, 20--, 21 inches. The nurses created beautiful little picture drawings and put them around her bedside, notes of love and prayers. As mom got closer with help of Nurses guiding her to stand she peered down as close as she could get. Not able to pick her up because of the many many wires and tubes. She had wires on her little head, on her little tiny hand and wires to her belly button. Another wire attached to her little foot. Mom asked the nurse why? She was then told what had happened in a brief version and told what the different wires were and what they were doing. The wires in tummy are to feed her. Wires to her nose is Oxygen. Wire to her foot is where we took her blood and we are monitoring her. Nurse states "you can touch her mom, she knows your touch". Mom softly and quietly rubbed little Kearstyn hand and told her "Mommy's here baby", "You're going to be ok" with tears running down her face and having difficulty holding back the shaking in her voice. The nurses left mom alone with little Kearstyn for about 5 minutes maybe a little longer with mom standing next to her little bed and the bubble over her little body. Her little hands were clinched tightly and her eyes clothes, but with a peaceful sense on her little face. Nurses came back with a rocking chair and stated that we need to discuss with you on breast feeding and then the Nurologist is going to come by and speak with you. After time of instruction on breast feeding into bottles for the nurses to feed Kearstyn. The Nurologist came by and asked mom to come with him. Mom was told about the 3 strokes and shown the MRI / Xray, and told what she was seeing, the gray areas and what they were. Definition was told "Right Frontal Infart", nothing more than that was told, no expectation only that Kearstyn would need to stay in the hospital for undetermined amount of time right now. Mom remained in the hospital for 3 days, spending the majority of her time at bedside. Family and Friends were notified and the Prayers and Prayer Groups started. Mom comes from a very Faith driven family and knows the power of prayer. She began talking to the Lord and asking him for strength, wisdom, and guidance. Mom prayed over her little Kearstyn and dedicated her to him and asked for Angels of protection around her and her bed. Mom prayed for peace for herself and she prayed that the Lord would send help to her. Mom stayed by her bed and as the days went by little Kearstyn's condition slowly began to shows glimmers of improvement and hope. Mom was able to sit next to her bed in the rocking chair and the nurses would put little Kearstyn in her arms for mom to rock her and talk to her, while still attached to the many wires. Mom was able to start feeding her with a bottle and breast milk and little Kearstyn started fixing her eyes on Mommy. Mommy would sing to her, talk to her and tell her about all the wonderful things she would do in her life. Mommy would tell her how beautiful and smart she is. Mommy would tell her about all the family that can't wait to meet her. Kearstyn over the days would start gaining little bits of weight and would start smiling when she would see mommy for mommy's visits. Mommy stayed at her bedside and occassionally was only gone for a few hours at a time. Mommy would sleep in the rocking chair next to her bed and kept her finger touching Kearstyn's hand, every moment she was able to. Several more days went by and the Dr. came to talk with Mommy. He said "Keartstyn is having difficulty doing BM", we really need her to poop. She must stay here until we are certain she is able to go home with some ability to be away from the hospital. She was still on Oxygen, but according to the Dr.'s she could go home on Oxygen but the BM issue was a concern. Mommy, went back to bedside, and cuddling and bonding with Kearstyn would have conversation with Kearstyn. Kearstyn rocking in the chair and mommy telling her " ok Kearstyn, Mommy needs you to poop, it's really important that you do this, so you can get out of here and go home". Mommy prayed a long prayer asking the Lord to help and heal her little Kearstyn. The next day when Mommy came by for visit she was approached by Nurse with smile on her face, prior to mom getting to bedside. Nurse said , "We have good news today". "Kearstyn Pooped!!!" in quite a excited voice, her tone elevated enough for the other nurses attending the other babies to turn their heads and look and smile. The nurse stated, "The Dr. wants to meet with you and discuss expectations". Mommy was SO excited the tears just kept flowing and flowing and her face felt as though it was on fire from the salt of the tears. Wiping away the constant flow of tears and swollen eyes she could not stop from smiling and thanking God for this wonderful miracle.

PART III THE TRUE LOVE STORY

Mom met with the Neurologist and he told mom more information and expectations. He told mom that I was improving miracously. He said "I am not sure what you're doing or what you're telling her, but keep doing it, it appears to be working"... Mom thanked God for his love and mercy and could not wait to get back to me and spend me time with me. The same day before mom was ready to go home for the night the nurse came by. Mom says she sat next to mom and gave her words of incouragement and talked to mom about faith and hope. Mom says the nurse told her that all the Dr.'s and Nurses all say that I am so beautiful and will grow up to be an Amazing Child. The nurse said, "She is a Strong one". I am and I come by it naturally is what Grandma says, all the time. The next day when mom came for her visit, there was more improvement. The Dr. came to see mommy and he told mommy that I continue to improve and this night under very close supervision and monitoring they were going to see how I would do with out the Oxygen line. The Dr. told mommy that if I could breathe on my own without it through the night and the next day until mommy came to visit with good results, I might get to go home. Mommy says she cried with excitement.

True Love Story Part IIII

Its been a challenging several years since mommy has updated this blog. Alot of exciting ups and downs over the years. Kearstyn is approaching 10 years of age in a few months and mommy is so amazed and still so full of Love for me she says since the day I came home from the hospital. Mommy says, so many ney sayers through the years. "she'll never be able to do this and that". I've proven them all wrong. (Dr's, Therapists, Teachers, Specialists, and just people in general). Mommy says I AM SMART and I AM BEAUTIFUL and I CAN DO ANYTHING I SET MY MINE TO. Moms right. I enjoy sports, singing, my cat Tinkerbell, spending time with Grandma and Mommy. I enjoy shopping and Amusement Parks, I like to ride my bike and swimming, I am really good at swimming. I like traveling, we do it alot. I have been to many different states in United States during my travels (Colorado, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California) and so much more to see. I still have medical concerns, but who doesn't. Everyone experiences something in their lives, the only thing that matters is your own personal confidence in yourself and the drive to accomplish what you set out for yourself in your life. Remember that Christ brought us to this world for a purpose, or we would not be here. The story continues, and its an amazing journey... Stay Tuned for more of the Adventures of Kearstyn

True Love Story V: Big Milestone Accomplishment with Caution

April 2013 Kearstyn was admitted into Cooks Childrens for Evaluation of Brain Activity (EEG) and Seizure monitoring. The whole experience was challenging from the placement of the wires on the scalp, the uncomfortable time consuming process, the adhesive to the itching. Kearstyn made it through that whole process, there were a few tears but all in all not to bad. The most daunting process in the whole stay was the UNKNOWN. From Kearstyn's birth to April 8th she was on some sort of medication for seizure maintenance everything from Phenobarbitol to Carbamazapine (tegritol) to Clonpin. And now she is free of it all. BUT with the instruction from her many Dr's this does not go without more challenges. FIRST she is high risk for falling, headaches, and Grand Mal Seizures. When Kearstyn was age 2 she went through a similar situation as to what she is going through right now. She had not had any seizure activity for about 6mo - year and the Dr's took her off her medication and 30 days almost to the day she was removed from it she GranMal 'd. The experience of that is engraved in my mind for my daughter. I specifically remember it clearly. She was so little back then, she was a sleep in my bed snuggled up close, sleeping so peacefully. Then during the early morning I was awaken by loud, gurgling and flayling. I jumped up and looked at her, I jumped into protective, think clearly and stay focused mode. I grabbed the phone and immediately called 911 and explained the situation. Her eyes were rolled back in her head and she was flayling around, I was advised to protect her from injuring herself until the ambulance gets there. I heard the ambulance coming, I picked her up and held her close to me and ran for the ambulance; I explained to them the situation and we proceeded on to Children's hospital Denver, CO. Time flew by... But during these years that experience has always remained somewhat in the for thought of my mind. NOW I am extremely excited that her Dr's say she may have grown out of the seizures but only time will tell. TIME, yes I understand what that all means and extreme CAUTION as well. I do believe in prayer and I know without a shadow of a doubt that our Lord and Savior has Kearstyn in the palm of his hand.

Perinatal Stroke

A perinatal stroke means a stroke that occurs in a baby anywhere from after 28 weeks of pregnancy up to 28 days after birth. In some cases, this can lead to childhood epilepsy.

What is Epilepsy?

By definition epilepsy is a disease of the brain in which a person suffers from infrequent uppredictable but recurrent seizures (convulsions). Most people who are not familiar with epilepsy think of it as causing the whole body to shake. Although some seizures may fit that discription, not all seizures do. They can vary from mere moments of staring into space without body shaking to transient shaking of a single body part without loss of consciousness. Epilepsy can be "cryptogenic" (i.e., due to unknown cause), but commonly it is caused by an abnormality in the structure of the brain (e.g., the presence of an arteriovenous malformation).

A permanent injury to the brain caused by stroke can become a cause of recurrent seizures (i.e. epilepsy). In fact, perinatal strokes are thought to be the second most common cause of perinatal seizures. Perinatal strokes occur with a frequency of 1 in 4000 live births. About 17% of full term babies who suffer perinatal seizures have suffered strokes.

STROKE 101

For many, stroke is only something they learn about after they or someone they know has been affected. Here are some references to get you started understanding the complexities of stroke.
